Finding Your Style
Style evolves throughout our lives. Whether you’re transitioning from college to the workforce, getting married, having a baby, or getting a divorce, your style is going to change. Our best tips for finding your authentic style are:
Stay True to Yourself
There is only one of you! So if pink isn’t your thing, don’t wear it just because it’s “in.” Wear things that feel like you and make you feel good!
Don’t like it? Change it!
No one said you have to keep the dress that looked great in high school! If your style isn’t working for you anymore, by all means, change it!
There are No Rules!
I know your grandma says no white after Labor Day, but those hard and fast-fashion rules are gone now! The truth is, there are no rules now! You can wear whatever makes you feel the best whenever you want! This can be daunting to the beginner fashionista. Our advice is to start pinning outfits on Pinterest. That will give you a guideline toward what you’re aiming for and what kind of basic clothing to start with.
Styling Different Body Types
Styling has nothing to do with body type and everything to do with inner confidence. We can put you in the perfect outfit, but if you don’t love yourself and feel good about who you are, you won’t like anything you put on your body. You have to dig deep and learn to love yourself.
Remember, people don’t see you the way you see yourself. Everyone’s worried about how they look.
Body Confidence Misconceptions
People think insecurity only hits certain groups of people. But that negative self-talk comes for us all. And you just have to learn how to stop it. Angie imagines security guards in her head who kick those negative thoughts out.
How to Be More Confident in Your Body
Declutter Your Closet!
If there’s something in your closet that does not fit, put it away. We don’t need that negativity in our closet. When you have clothes in your closet that you can’t wear, it makes you think you have more clothes than you do. Why is it in your closet if it doesn’t make you feel your best? Let that mood killer go!
Date Your Clothes
If you like it, wear it. Who cares what anybody thinks? When you wear clothing for the first time, it can be a bit uncomfortable or feel awkward, but don’t give up yet! It’s like a first date, give it three dates before tossing it. We’ve found that it takes three times to feel comfortable in a new piece.
Think Before You Buy
Of course, there are basic staple pieces: a classic, white button-up, a blazer, a pair of black pants, and jeans that hug you just right. But, you need to think about what you are adding to your closet.
Ask yourself, is it necessary to buy your favorite sweater in every color? It’s just adding more chaos to the closet, which makes it hard to hone in on your style. Before you buy something, try to think of three different ways you can wear that piece and three different places you can wear the piece. This provides you with a closet that’s full of versatility.
What Should We Avoid?
If you don’t feel good in the clothes, don’t wear them. Even if it’s trendy. Period. If you have broad shoulders and you don’t like the trendy blazers with shoulder pads, don’t wear them!
Tailoring is a great way to make clothes feel better on your body because everybody is unique. Ready-to-wear is NOT ready to wear for almost everyone.
Other than that, there are no rules!
Does Self-Care Relate to Body Confidence?
Body positivity is an inside job, no one’s going to do it for you. You have to work at it through self-care and self-awareness. Self-care directly relates to the confidence you feel in your body. Normally, when we think of self-care, we think of mani pedis, spas, and massages; but self-care can be simple affirmations and positive self-talk.
Some great Christian affirmations to utilize are:
“This is the way God made me.”
“I am created in God’s image.” (Genesis 1:27)
“I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” (Psalm 139:14)
Remember, when you talk bad about yourself, you’re talking bad about one of God’s creations.
Prepping for Monday
Did you know it takes the average woman 17 minutes a day to plan their look? How much time are you wasting by not planning out your outfits?
Sunday Night Prep is vital to ensure your week goes off without a hitch! Essentially, you’re going to prep all five outfits for the next week. Planning outfits will help you find your style and wear what’s in your closet.
Sure, it sounds simple, but simple is effective.
FAQs For My Girlies Who Skim
How do I find my style?
We recommend scrolling through Pinterest and finding outfits that inspire you. You’ll start to see trends in what you like and what doesn’t feel like you. Feel free to change as needed with different seasons in your life.
How do I feel confident in my body?
Feeling confident starts as an inside job. You have to find your worth and identity in God first before you can ever truly feel confident. You can find the right clothes, and everyone can compliment you, but if you don’t feel confident on the inside, you won’t be confident on the inside.
Are there rules I need to follow?
There are no rules in fashion besides having fun with what you wear!
